The brief

Home Path is a housing initiative operating under Watford Borough Council. It serves residents navigating housing options — from first steps to settled homes. The brief was to create a brand identity that could live comfortably within WBC’s existing brand family while being distinctive enough to operate independently when needed.

Sub-brand work is one of the more strategically demanding briefs in brand design. You are not starting from scratch, and you are not simply applying a parent brand. You are creating something that has to face in two directions at once.

The challenge

A sub-brand that is too close to its parent becomes invisible within it — just another service, not a distinct entity. A sub-brand that drifts too far from its parent loses the trust and credibility that the parent brand carries. Home Path needed to thread that gap precisely.

The visual connection to WBC had to be clear enough that residents immediately understood this was a council service — and therefore trustworthy, accountable, official. But the identity also needed enough warmth and character to feel approachable rather than institutional.

The mark had to say: this is WBC. And this is something more.

The mark

The mark fuses three ideas into a single contained form: the letterform H, a house with a roof line, and a winding path leading toward it. Each element earns its place — nothing is decorative. Together they communicate the literal meaning of the name while creating a symbol that reads clearly at any size.

The gradient runs from warm yellow through orange to a deep red-orange — a deliberate reference to WBC’s own colour palette. Anyone familiar with the council will feel the connection immediately. Anyone who isn’t will simply see a warm, considered mark for a housing service.

Horizontal

Mark and wordmark side by side. For letterheads, website headers, co-branding contexts. Reads as authoritative and clear. Works well when there is horizontal space and the identity needs to stand alongside other elements.

Stacked

Wordmark curved beneath the mark, following the base of the circle. For standalone use, signage, social media, contexts where the mark leads. The curved wordmark echoes the circular form and gives the identity a warmer, more community-facing character.

In use

How the identity performs across the touchpoints a housing service actually uses: letters, digital communications, signage, printed materials and co-branded WBC contexts.

Reflection

Sub-brand work demands a particular kind of discipline. You have to understand the parent brand as thoroughly as the new entity — and then make a clear-eyed decision about exactly how much distance to put between them.

Home Path sits close to WBC by design. The people it serves are the same residents WBC serves. The trust it needs is trust the council has already built. The identity reflects that relationship without being subsumed by it.
